Chemistry: Molecular Driving Forces and Chemical Bonding

Course · 15 credits

Description

Dive into the atomic and nanoscale world and learn how molecules and atoms interact and bond with each other. Get a grip on temperature and why it is so important in controlling balances in chemistry and living cells. We cover spectroscopy, quantum chemistry, intermolecular interactions, statistical thermodynamics, and a primer on using Python programming in chemistry.

KEMM30. The course provides a fundamental framework for describing (bio)molecules and their interactions from a microscopic perspective. This includes quantum chemistry, statistical thermodynamics, intermolecular interaction, and spectroscopy. The student gain insight into chemical bonding, molecular properties, and how these relate to thermodynamics, temperature and interactions in solution.

The student will learn how spectroscopy and models of intermolecular interactions can be used to understand the properties of biomolecules, such as proteins, DNA and membranes. Concepts such as hydrophobic interactions, co-operative binding, depletion interactions, hydrogen bonding, electrical double layer will be treated.

To handle large data sets, generated either from experiments, simulations, or database searches, the student will acquire basic programming and scripting skills to handle, analyze and present complex data.

Course content

Lectures: Quantum chemistry and statistical thermodynamics, including a statistical interpretation of entropy, ensembles. The course highlights fundamental contributions to interactions between atoms, (bio)molecules and surfaces. The course also includes basic programming/scripts for import and analysis of complex data, assembly, visualization, and presentation of data. The basics of rotational, vibration and electronic spectroscopy, both in absorption and emission as well as basic concepts, Raman spectroscopy and circular dichroism spectroscopy are also treated.

Exercises and assignments illustrate and exemplify the concepts introduced and discussed in the lectures.

Laboratory work illustrate and exemplify the concepts introduced in the lectures and may be experimental or computational. Students are trained in report writing and peer review where other reports are assessed and constructive feedback is exchanged.

English language requirements

Most of Lund University’s programmes require English Level 6 (unless otherwise stated under 'Entry requirements'). This is the equivalent of an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 90. There are several ways to prove your English language proficiency – check which proof is accepted at the University Admissions in Sweden website. All students must prove they meet English language requirements by the deadline, in order to be considered for admission.

How to apply

Lund University uses a national application system run by University Admissions in Sweden. It is only possible to apply during the application periods.

When to apply for studies

Step 1: Apply online

  • Check that you meet the entry requirements of the programme or course you are interested in (refer to the section above on this webpage).
  • Start your application – go to the University Admissions in Sweden website where you create an account and select programmes/courses during the application period.
Visit the University Admissions in Sweden website
  • Rank your programme/course choices in order of preference and submit them before the application deadline.

Step 2: Submit documents

  • Read about how to document your eligibility and how to submit your documents at the University Admissions in Sweden website. Follow any country-specific document rules for Master's studies or Bachelor's studies
    Country-specific requirements for Bachelor's studies – universityadmissions.se
    Country-specific requirements for Master's studies – universityadmissions.se

  • Get all your documents ready:
    - official transcripts and high school diploma (Bachelor's applicants)
    - official transcripts and degree certificate or proof that you are in the final year of your Bachelor's (Master's applicants)
    - passport/ID (all applicants) and
    - proof of English proficiency (all applicants).
